How does a water softener work?

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium that make water hard.   They contain resin beads that attract these minerals, and then use salt to flush them away during regeneration.

Will a water softener make my water safe to drink?

No, water softeners primarily address hardness minerals, not contaminants.   If you have concerns about drinking water safety, you may need a separate purification system.

Why does soft water feel slimy?

Soft water is actually cleaner because it doesn’t have minerals that interfere with soap.   This can make it feel different at first, but it’s not actually slimy.

How often do I need to add salt?

This depends on your water hardness and softener size.   Typically, you’ll need to add salt every few weeks or months.

Are there salt-free water softeners?

Yes, there are salt-free systems that use different methods to treat hard water minerals.   They may not be as effective at removing minerals as traditional softeners.
